Product Overview

Gunnar Optiks G0005-C001 SheaDog Full Rim Computer Glasses Review

Gunnar Optiks G0005-C001 SheaDog Computer Glasses is specially designed to block high energy blue light, UV and glare from various digital devices.

Gunnar Optiks which is the manufacturer of this glasses claims that it is a light weight eyewear that is recommended by doctors to protect and enhance your vision when using computers, laptops or even cell phones at work or even at home

They say that it is engineered for an immediate visual problem remedy and makes the user more productive because of the increased time that you can stay in front of a digital screen.

In this review, I will take a closer look on Gunnar Optiks glasses and I hope that this will answer your questions about it.

The frames are just medium fit and is good for all face shapes. The reduced height of the frames gives a better vision performance.

They also have low profile temples which provide the space for headset. Actually, I like that it is  compatible for headsets because most of the time, I listen to music when I use the computer or my laptop.

Its frame is also designed for long hours of usage without feeling any obstruction in your head.

It is made of onyx material and completely fastener free. I personally think that this is a good part of the eyewear because most of the time when I wear glasses, I am irritated by the hinge in the temples.

The frames is also not that heavy thus provides comfort and balance when wearing it.

When I am looking for a glasses, I always judge it first with the lenses. I believe that its ability to keep my eyes from being dry is far way more important, right?

So the lenses are designed with tints and coatings that block high-energy blue light, UV and glare.

It is covered with amber tint, which is the most common material used for computer glasses. That’s why you will notice that the lens is somehow yellowish. Actually, this yellow tint may be unusual at first but you will feel that you can stare in front of the computer for a longer period of time.

The lens is also made to protect your eyes from dry air currents which is the primary cause of eye irritation.

Based on all user experience, Gunnar glasses have a slight magnification. I believe it has 0.2x magnification but it is not that high compared to prescription glasses.

The design is used to bring the image a little closer in order to minimize eye strain. This also increases the contrast of the screen which makes the screen clearer.

The same with the yellowish tint, you will somehow feel the slight zoom on things but it is just tolerable.By the way, for those who have 20/20 vision, this slight magnification will not bring damage to your eyes.

But for those who want to have a strong magnification, I believe that Gunnar also offers that eyewear.

The Gunnar computer glasses doesn’t include the eyewear case or any cleaning cloth. Basically it is offered as separate product when buying the eyewear.

I think that the case should be added with the glasses so that it will have a container that will prevent any scratches in the lenses. Because most of the time, if I just put the glasses inside my bag, I always see added scratches in the lenses which I don’t like.

On the other hand, they have limited warranty that covers against defects that lasts for 1 year.

I have no questions about the quality of the product. I believe that it serves its purpose which is to minimize eye strain.

The major benefit of these glasses is the increased hours in front of a digital screen without having red eyes. This enables you to be more productive at your work.

But it doesn’t mean that you don’t have to take a break from using your devices. I still recommend that you take a 5 minute break every hour or two in order to help minimizing the strain.

Like what I have said earlier, the yellow tint may be unusual at first but you will eventually get used to it. The arms of the eye glasses are flat which accommodate headsets better. So wearing headsets will not be a problem.

The eyewear may noticeably decrease your headache caused by eye strain but your eyes will still get tired. And this is normal. You will also see that it will not be that red and the burning feeling is already reduced.

Honestly, I think that this is somehow costly. But if we consider the materials it is made up of and the comfort it can give, I don’t mind the price. Actually, I am working full time as a cad drafter. So I work 8 hours a day in front of the computer and computer glasses helped me ease the redness in my eyes.

I must say that if you really need it and it is required to minimize your eye pain during your work then you can get one.

On the other hand, if you are tight in the budget, I recommend that you start with the cheaper computer glasses. There are some that costs only $30 or less.

If you feel that it is effective for you, then that is the time to invest in something that costs more.

Helpful Tips

Here are some of my helpful tips on how to use the eyewear.

  • Give at least a week to get used to the tint and slight magnification of the glasses. If that doesn’t work then you should probably find other brand of computer glasses that can help you.
  • Include an eye wear case for the glasses. In this way, it will have a better protection and will make it last longer.

Bottom Line

Over-all, I find the product beneficial. Most especially if you have a severe eye problem after staring at a very long time in front of a digital screen.

I think that it will benefit those people who work in front of the computer for 6-8 hours. I believe that health is far way important than anything else so if you are feeling something serious in your eyes, go tell a doctor.

But for those who just wants to relieve the pain, computer glasses maybe a immediate remedy for you.

Hi Everyone! I created this website to share my thoughts about the solutions to various eye problems that are caused by too much staring at digital screens. I also tackle about preventive measures to minimize the harmful effects of UV rays.

  1. Hi, John, it is a fascinating assessment that you have done on these Gunnar Optics. I have never used any gaming glasses before. In fact, I almost never wear glasses at all. I will look into what you have suggested.

Do you think that this is not common knowledge that People can damage the retinas of their eyes looking at screens for long periods of time? This is the first time I have even heard about gaming glasses.

    1. Yes, gaming glasses is a growing instant solution to common eye problems caused by too much exposure to digital screens such as computers. Most people don’t know about it because they actually don’t find computers as a threat to their health. But then, nowadays people already notice the side effects caused by these too much radiation.

  2. I was wondering how the glasses claim to keep the eyes from getting less strained. Is it because of the magnification or the colored lens? I am just unfamiliar with the logistics behind it but I could see how it would help, seeing how I work in front of the computer as well.

    1. The main thing that makes it helpful in preventing eye strain is the tint in the lenses. This amber tint reflects the excess harmful light from the computers. Actually if you look at it, it is somehow yellowish in color. This ensures that you can spend more time in front of a digital screen.

The slight magnification also helps. It makes the image clearer thus helps your eyes for longer periods of hour. But don’t worry that much from the magnification because it is not that noticeable.

  3. Hey John, great article here!
Wow I was hoping for a better price on these, and it would be nice if they added a case with them, I’m always setting my glasses down where they don’t belong and getting more scratches on them.
So I was wondering about the quality of the lenses, do they scratch easily, and how about the tint, does it distort the colors on the screen that you are viewing?
So with the price being around $70.00 and a case at $10.00, that would be $80.00, So how do these compare to other glasses?

    1. Hi there man! I think that the price they gave is just reasonable for the quality of the eyewear. As for the lenses, like any other glasses it can be scratched of not taken care of. Most especially if it has no protective case. But if you use it with care then scratches are not a problem. As for the tint, no it doesn’t distort the colors in the screen. Surprisingly, I was able to adjust with it and never had a problem. But I suggest that you give time for your yes to completely adjust to it. On the other hand, there are some version of this glasses that have a transparent tint so you can check the crystalline glassess if you want. Nevertheless, I still find this eyewear a worth it investment

      1. Hey John, thanks for replying to my questions, I think you have sold me on getting me a pair of these, and I will definitely give my eyes time to adjust.
        Agan thanks for the response.

  4. These Glasses sound pretty great. If you review them 4.2 out of 5. Can you explain high energy Blue light to me? I like how you mentioned they are for computers. The amber lenses might not go over so well as a fashion statement, but who knows maybe they would.

    1. Basically, blue light is a part of the visible light spectrum that reaches deeper into our eyes. If not prevented, it can cause damage to our retinas. Computer glasses is only one of the few ways on how we can prevent it from damaging our eyes.

About the amber lens, yes you are right. It may seem unusual at first but the benefits that you can get still outweighs the fashion statement that you are saying. Nevertheless, it still depends on a persons personal choice.
