Specifications

FRAME

The frame of Julbo Bivouak Mountain Sunglasses is made up of 100% nylon. It could be colored in black or matte black.

At front view, the frame sports a high nose bridge that creates a single line with the topmost part of the rims. The rims are almost rectangular with rounded edges. The frame could resemble classic sunglasses in one way.

There are adjustable magnetic wings located at the temples to resemble goggles. Aside from those, the logo of Julbo is placed on the outer sides of the temples and they could be adjusted by 360°. A few centimeters after the temple, there is another segment of the arm forming the ear grips.

The ear grips bend downward until it comes to the tips that both have rectangular slits. In total, the arms of this pair extend up to 115 mm (4.53 in). The nose pads are not adjustable.

The gap created is 19 mm (0.75 in). The overall weight of the assembly is 32 g (1.12 oz). The frame is said to have an Asian fit.

LENSES

The lenses of this Julbo Bivouak glasses are called Zebra. The color could be yellow or grey. They are made of NXT polyurethane material.

The shape of the lenses is dictated by the rims with a base of 8, accentuated by two rectangular slits at the top, outermost corners of each. The NXT lenses are super high reactive (SHR) photochromic – they darken or lighten depending on the available light.

The surface of each lens is coated with a material that gives long-lasting anti-fog property. The external side of the lenses is also coated with an oil-repellant material.

Julbo also offers lenses that could match the user’s visual grade from +3.00 to -5.00 diopters.

ACCESSORIES

All pairs of Julbo glasses come with a hard case for storage, protection, and preservation. The hard case is enough to protect the glasses from contamination, deterioration, or breakage.

In addition, there are also adjustable straps that could be tied at the ends of each arm. The purpose of the strap is for perfect and snug fit on the user’s head.

Performance

The unique characteristic of Julbo sunglasses is its removable magnetic wings on its temples. However, the magnets do not have very strong attraction, so some shields come off easily. This could pose a problem for a user that is always in motion.

The issue with the magnetic shield may be annoying for some but its main purpose is to give the user a choice of how he or she wants the glasses to look or function.

Also, being a constant air-tight goggles does not allow smooth airflow around the user’s face. But the slits on the lenses optimizes airflow and prevents unnecessary perspiration.

Even without hydrophilic material to line the nose pads, the glasses are still comfortable to use. The overall structure that prevents perspiration or oiliness, as well as the snug fit provided by the 360° adjustable temples and ear grips, plus the provision of straps prevents the glasses from slipping down the user’s nose.

Moreover, the material used for the frame is durable and flexible that it could mold exactly according to the contours of the user’s face. The weight is not compromised, such that when the user wears the glasses, the ear lobes are not pressed enough to be uncomfortable.

Meanwhile, the lenses are made of NXT polyurethane material. Looking deeper, a military technology has paved the way for a material called Trivex that provides strong resistance to impact whilst retaining optical clarity and light weight.

This material is further processed to have a Confined Tint that offers Light Translation Technology to persons with visual defects. As such, NXT lenses could have prescriptions or are Rx-able ready.

NXT lenses are made to have a special spectral curve that allows 7 – 41% of light transmission. Yet, these lenses do not permit the transmission of 100% ultraviolet (UV) light. Thus, the eyes could remain protected from having photokeratitis, various forms of cataracts, cancer, macular degeneration, and other visual defects and ailments.

Another positive feature of Zebra lenses is its photochromic characteristic with a protection index of 2 to 4. According to the protection standard of Conformité Européenne (CE), lenses with 2 to 4 protection index transmits visible light at a rate of 18 – 43% to 3 – 8%.

Zebra lenses are not polarized but it is okay for the transition is smooth. The problem lies with extreme temperatures as Zebra lenses still darken in cold weather. The transition becomes sluggish at extreme weather conditions.

Pricing

Based on my last research, the basic Julbo Bivouak Mountain Sunglasses costs for $180 for single vision. Other prescription and add-ons have an additional price on top of the basic.

There might also be a shipping fee of $5.00. I must say that the cost may be expensive. The frames and its structure may not be top of the line, but the technology involved in making the lenses are exceptional.

Bottom Line

The unique feature of the Julbo Bivouak Mountain Sunglasses is its magnetic shields, but a consumer will not buy this pair for that. Instead, he or she will be fascinated on the NXT lenses of these glasses.

The glasses could be useful for any outdoor activities. Yet, the lenses could still improve by making its photochromic property unaffected by extreme temperatures.

Pros

  • Durable and Lightweight
  • Includes hard case
  • Nylon Material

Cons

  • Cleaning may take some time

I think that having magnetic shields on these glasses could be useful. Think about it, you could change out the shields to suit your purpose. By doing this, you’re actually getting more functionality out of your glasses. Instead, of changing glasses, you change the shield. I really don’t see this as a negative.

I agree with you. This would definitely a good choice if you are active in sports and need a pair of protective glasses.
