Chelsea sunglasses by Michael Kors is styled as an aviator eyewear. This style is characterized by slightly inverted triangular rims about two or three times larger than the size of the eyeball.

For the Chelsea model, the rims are thickest at the temples. They are connected by thin strips – a nose bridge and a brow bridge, creating a so-called “bullet-hole.”

The nose bridge is lined with two, clear adjustable nose pads.

It employs almost the same design as the original aviator glasses except that Chelsea sunglasses uses skull temples instead of bayonet. Skull temples slightly curve downward as it reaches the ears. Near the temples, there is a MICHAEL KORS brand printed.

The ends are covered by a polymer/plastic material that could be in black, white, grey, orange, green, or violet. The whole frame is made of metal that can be in copper, gold, silver, gunmetal, and rose gold.

The lenses follow the shape and dimensions set by the frame. They have rounded edges that are slightly triangular in shape.

All of the lenses are tinted that helps in reducing glares. The available colors for tint are orange flash, orange, transparent, brown, grey, purple silver, blue, and silver. There is a MICHAEL KORS brand printed at the top outer edge.

The lenses may be mirrored or not, polarized or not, and offers 100% protection versus ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Michael Kors Women's Chelsea Polarized Sunglasses Review

Michael Kors doesn’t specify whether their glasses are Rx-able or prescription-ready. Neither do they indicate if the lenses contain any magnification.

However, based from the nose pads that are adjustable, the optical alignment could be changed frequently, followed by the grade.

Though, these glasses are not really made as prescription. Michael Kors is a fashion glasses that doesn’t necessarily concern people with visual acuity problems. If ever Michael Kors has magnification in its lenses, it is a good move for the fashion industry to go forward and include imperfections to its considerations.

The glasses of Michael Kors includes a clam shell hard case with a magnetic closure. The original case is covered in white leather with the brand name and logo printed on top.

Apart from the glasses, a cleaning cloth is also included in the package. It effectively wipes away stains, dust, dirt, moisture, and other foreign substances from the lenses surface.

More Information About the Eyewear

Being an aviator glasses, it suits well for people that have square and heart shaped faces. The lenses have rounded edges, softening and complementing the angular edges of square faces.

It differs from the original aviator glasses used by pilots because of the temples. Original aviator glasses have bayonet temples which provides easy removal and wearing of the glasses even with the cap on.

On the other hand, skull temples hook to the ears of the user to prevent slipping. Nowadays, aviator-styled glasses are used by many people even those who are not related to aviation. It is popularized by Tom Cruise and gave aviator-styled glasses a trend in the fashion industry.

Although originally worn by males, Michael Kors has made a way for aviator glasses to be applicable to female by introducing colors related to femininity.

Since it is made of metal, the glasses is slightly heavier than plastic framed glasses, as what it is supposed to be. Yet, the weight is bearable enough to not create dents on the nose of the user since the metal frame is flat and thin.

Metal frames are prone to corrosion so they are plated with other oxidation-resistant metals to protect the base material while providing the needed luster and sophisticated look.

To prevent further deterioration, a plastic material covers the tips of the arms where it catches the perspiration of the user. By the way, sweat is a combination of acidic environment and moisture – both agents of oxidation.

Going back to the history of aviator glasses, this eyewear is purposely made to diminish the amount of light from entering the eyes. Aviators are constantly exposed to bright surroundings as they fly the aircraft thereby being at risk of different visual problems caused by glare and UV radiation.

These include, but not limited to, cataracts, blindness, photokeratitis, macular degeneration, and eye cancer.

Michael Kors, even at the current age and with non-aviators as its market, does not strip off the needed qualities of the eyewear. The lenses of the Chelsea model may or may not be mirrored. This characteristic doesn’t allow other individuals to have a view of the user’s eyes.

This suggests that a portion of the light is reflected off the lenses surface. On the other hand, the polarized lenses only allows a fraction of the light with a specific orientation to pass through it. Thus, glares or high-intensity light is reduced to something that is bearable for the eyes.

In addition, the lenses have been graced by a 100% UV protection.

Michael Kors offers an above average price  for this sunglasses that ranges from $49.00 to $80.00. The price depends on the color and the available features of the glasses.

For fashion glasses coming from a well-known fashion icon, the prices are in the expected range and not so much at the high end luxury items.

Helpful Tips

Since it is an investment, it is important to take care of your eyewear. So here are some helpful tips that you can follow in order to keep it for a longer period of time.

  • Always keep the glasses inside the hard case. This will protect the eyewear from breakage if it experience sudden fall.
  • Only use the provided micro fiber cloth in cleaning the lenses. This will ensure that scratches can be prevented.

Bottom Line

Michael Kors is an accessory brand mostly focused on bags. With this new venture on glasses, it is a good move to start with aviators.

Although the current market involves people not related with aviation, they still include features of original aviator glasses, particularly those of the lenses. It serves as a protective eyewear as well as an accessory. Anyhow, this brand and model could be recommended to family and friends.

  • Stylish
  • Durable and lightweight
  • Includes case and cleaning cloth
  • Plenty of choices

  • Maybe too big for some people

Hi Everyone! I created this website to share my thoughts about the solutions to various eye problems that are caused by too much staring at digital screens. I also tackle about preventive measures to minimize the harmful effects of UV rays.

  1. Hey John!
I’m doing some online Christmas shopping and came across this site. My girlfriend says she wants a pair of glasses that are “Blue” blockers. I’m not quite sure what that means… I’ve tried researching, but haven’t found much on that. These glasses look like they would be perfect for her. Do you think they fit her preference?

    1. Is she referring about blue light? I am not quite sure if this eyewear can block the blue light. But it can definitely protect the eyes from the UV rays.
