Product Overview

Cheapest Place to Buy: Amazon.com

Unique Feature: Anti Reflective Lenses; Variety of Styles

My Rating: 9.6 out of 10

Oakley Radar Shield sunglasses only cover the upper half of the lenses. The frame runs a single plastic material from the brow ridge to the arms. The plastic used to make the frame is patented by Oakley and is called O-matter.

There are also nose pads at the bottom middle of the lenses and ear socks near the ends of each arm made of unobtanium. The ear socks and nose pads are well defined from the brow ridge by shape and color. The nose pads could be adjusted by bit as well as the temples.

The arms are intricately sculpted.

There is an O design found on the temples. This detail is an intelligently placed logo of Oakley. There are also two holes burrowed through the arms. The first one is placed near the O detail while the other is situated at the end of both arms.

The available colors for the frame are black, polished black, matte black, x-ray blue, sky blue, silver, and polished white.

Just like the frame, the lenses are also made of plastic. Actually, there is only one lens because this model is a type of shield glasses.

Shield type is characterized by a single lens that runs from temple to temple. As previously mentioned, the lenses are connected to the frame on the upper half part. Throughout this connection, there are notable gaps in which the lenses look chipped so as not to touch the frame.

Although made of a single material, the bottom part is sculpted with an inverted V shape. This shape of the lens makes it still look like two lenses merged at the middle.

Some lenses have the Oakley brand name printed at the middle and on the bottom corner side, the print reads what kind of technology is imposed on the lens. The lenses are removable and interchangeable. Some of the technology applied on the lenses are iridium, prizm, anti-reflective coating, 100% ultra-violet (UV) protection, prescription-ready (Rx-able), polarized or non-polarized and impact-resistance.

The available colors for the lens are black, solid black, prizm, red iridium, sapphire iridium, fire iridium, and prizm sapphire.

Each Oakley pair of glasses comes with a hard zipper case and a carrying pouch. The hard case is shaped like a shell and sports the Oakley logo.

The outside of the case is covered by a woven cloth. This case could protect the glasses from contamination and mechanical breakage.

The cloth lessens the impact when the case is dropped. The downside is the cleaning part where the user must have a scrub to shoo dust particles lying between fibers. Anyhow, both cases are colored black; hence, dirt and contamination are not that noticeable.

O-matter is described as a lightweight, pliable, and durable plastic material. Although being made of plastic, O-matter doesn’t exhibit the “cheap” plastic feel.

Just like other Oakley frame materials, O-matter is a nylon-infused plastic which makes it more stress-resistant. The difference with other materials is being less rigid; thus, being able to be shaped better when following the contours of the user’s face.

Meanwhile, the nose pads and ear socks being made of unobtanium allows the assembly to become more fixed on the user’s head even with sweat or in contact with water.

Unobtanium is hydrophilic and it improves the tackiness of the frame’s contact with the user’s skin when wet. In addition, Oakley uses the three-point fit technology to be able to let the eyewear sit comfortably in the key facial features of the user’s face.

Oakley has also developed a lot of technology concerning the lenses. For an instance, iridium are metallic oxides heated at high temperatures to fuse with the lens at the molecular level. It generates a uniform filtering layer that brings optimum balance of light. This feature minimizes glare.

Prizm is a result of Oakley’s years of research in color technology. The resulting Prizm lens could look like a gasoline drop in a puddle of water. The colors are dispersed in such a way that a wavelength of light in that area is reflected off the lens’ surface.

Prizm technology enhances color and depth perception according to the type of activity. These technologies could also include anti-reflection (AR) as a result.

If ever the tint of the lens is too dark, Oakley makes sure that polarization is disabled. Anyhow, polarization is made to be high-definition by Oakley. The infusion molding process allows 99% glare reduction without compromising optical clarity.

The multiple layers of lens bring the UV-resistance characteristic that could block UV A, B, and C rays. This property lowers the chance of the user having different forms of cataracts, photokeratitis, macular degeneration, blindness, and even eye cancer.

It is also good to know that different visual grades are available for Oakley glasses.

Shield glasses of Oakley could have a price of $170 to $255. There are items, particularly the matte black ink frame with red iridium lens, that go on 36% sale saving the consumer a total of $62.

The price could be expensive, but it is answered by the intricate technology applied by Oakley to bring high-quality products.

Bottom Line

Oakley produces eyewear that offers uttermost comfort. Each product is apt for a specific environment. In whatever activity, Oakley has the pair of glasses that users could have his or her experience optimized. The downside is its cost but having quality glasses, it is an investment for visual health.

Hi Everyone! I created this website to share my thoughts about the solutions to various eye problems that are caused by too much staring at digital screens. I also tackle about preventive measures to minimize the harmful effects of UV rays.

  1. Oakly sun glasses seem very nice and worth the money. I had a pair when I was younger. I loved them, mostly because they where Oakly brand, and they felt really high quality. They where a gift and because I am quite small they didn’t really fit. I’ve always wanted some since, but didn’t know if they would have any that fit me right.

Do you know if they make sunglasses special for petite women?

    1. I believe that they make standard sizes for their sunglasses. So I am not sure if they make customized sizes.
