Specifications

FRAME

Erika glasses by Ray-Ban have full circular rims. The frame is made of composite plastic frames, particularly nylon. The temples of these glasses are slightly extended outwards.

At the middle of two circular rims is a keyhole nose bridge. Usually, the bridge widens up to 16 to 18 mm (0.63 to 0.71 in). Along the sides of the nose bridge lies two nose pads that are mere extensions of the rims. The arms are connected to each temple by classic metal screws.

The arms are thin and flat. The arms lengthen up to 139 and/or 145 mm (5.47 to 5.71 in). The end of each arms curve downwards and coated by a material same as the rims.

The color also follows. These include black, purple, brown tortoise, dark rubber sand, red velvet, brown, shiny silver, and rubber green.

LENSES

Just like the frames, the lenses are also circular. The dimensions of the lenses are as follows: 52 to 55 mm (2.05 to 2.17 in) wide and 43 to 46 mm (1.69 to 1.81 in).

The lenses are made of polycarbonate material. The available colors for the lenses are brown, purple, red multilayer, gradient grey, silver, and green. Some of the lenses are mirrored, polarized, and offers 100% protection from ultraviolet (UV) rays.

For authenticity, Ray-Ban glasses are etched with “RB” on the left lenses.

MAGNIFICATION

All of Ray-Ban glasses have Rx-able or prescription-ready lenses. People with visual acuity problems will not have a problem in wearing these glasses.

However, if the user experiences fluctuations in their visual grades, the lenses should be totally removed from the rims and replace with lenses matching the current grade. This is a strenuous process. If only the nose pads were adjustable, the matching of the visual grades would be much easier.

ACCESSORIES

Ray-Ban glasses come with a protective envelope-shaped case that goes with a variety of colors. This protective case is effective not only in mitigating stains and contamination from dust, dirt, oil, grease, and water, but also in preventing mechanical breakage from impact and/or pressure.

In addition, the envelope-shaped cases are fashionable enough as a pouch.

Performance

Erika glasses by Ray-Ban offers a variety of colors. Due to this, these glasses can be worn almost by anyone, anywhere, and in any occasion, partnering any kind of garment.

When it comes to face shapes, since the rims of these glasses are round, it goes well for people having square faces. The circular rims soften the angles and edges of square faces.

Ergonomics-wise, the nose bridge of this glasses is shaped like a keyhole. The upper part of the bridge sits tightly on the upper nose to prevent slipping. Meanwhile, the upper part does not touch the skin. This is purposely made in order to prevent that pinching effect that could be experienced by the user. In addition, this shape of nose bridge is perfect for people with narrow and thin noses.

Since the material of both the frame and the lenses is plastic, the glasses does not slip downwards at the nose. The polymer material is light that pressure on the nose and the ears are minimized. Hence, comfortability on the side of the user is increased.

The frames are made of a polymer or plastic called nylon. In the 1940s, nylon is already widely used as a frame material. However, due to the lack of technology, such frames are brittle. Today, nylon is blended with other additives to optimize its positive properties.

On a positive note, the frames made from nylon are strong and lightweight. As a general property of plastics or polymers, nylon is a good material for frames due to its hypo-allergenicity and corrosion-resistance. However, the colors and designs for such frames are to be coated on the nylon base.

As such, the toxicity, carcinogenicity, teratogenicity, mutagenicity, et. al., of the dyes and coating materials should be checked.

Meanwhile, the lenses also have its own remarkable properties. The lenses are made up of polycarbonate (PC) material. When it comes to optical property, PC is less outstanding in comparison to glass. Light is not 100% transmitted through a PC lens material.

Yet, PC is the top material displaying the shatter-proof property. All of the lenses are said to block 100% of UV rays. Hence, Erika glasses by Ray-Ban can protect the user’s eyes from photokeratitis, macular degeneration, different forms of cataracts, blindness, and eye cancer.

All of the lenses are tinted. Such tints may affect the color of the surroundings. On the bright side, these tints help create an illusion that the images viewed through these lenses are sharper and crisper.

Anyhow, there are lenses that have tint in gradient.

The color at the top of the lenses are darker compared to that at the bottom. This property allows the rays coming at a higher altitude to be minimized before entering the eyes. At the bottom, color distortion is lessened allowing the user to see normally as they could without the glasses.

There are also lenses that are mirrored; meaning, the light could bounce straight back to its source. This makes the user’s eyes hidden from other individuals with the user still seeing through the lenses. Some of the lenses are also polarized. Polarization only allows light of specific orientation to reach the eyes.

  1. Hey John,

    Thanks for the informative article.

I’ve been looking for a new pair of glasses before new years and think I’ve now made my choice.

The part that sold me was where you mentioned that these glasses won’t slip down your nose. My current glasses do that and it is very irritating.

FYI – I put your claim to the test (amazon being the cheapest place to get them) and after a bit of searching found it to be true!

    Thanks again,
    Joe.

    1. I am glad that I have helped you. I will let you know if I will know something that offers a cheaper option for this Rayban glasses.
