Product Overview

Product: Smith Optics Pivlock V2 Max Sunglasses

Cheapest Place to Buy:

Unique Feature: Interchangeable Lenses; Durable

My Rating: 9.5 out of 10

Smith Optics Max sunglasses takes a minimalist design for the frames. The part that is visibly present are the arms and the nose pads. They are linked to the temples while the nose pads are placed on the bottom center of the lenses.

In detail, the arms have a curvature that wraps around the user’s head. The temple tips slide with the Smith Optics logo visible at the outer sides. Coating near the ends of the arms are ear socks made of a rubber-like material. These arms lengthen up to 120 mm (4.72 in).

On the other hand, the nose pads are adjustable by two positions. Both the nose and temple pads are made of hydrophilic megol material.

The frame is made of TR-90 or Evolve material and is available in 14 colors. The hues vary from plain black to stark yellow.

At a first glance, the lenses are the only thing noticeable in Smith Optics Pivlock V2 Max Sunglasses, especially when worn. Compared to other models, the lenses are larger with a width of 140 mm (5.51 in) and height 50 mm (1.97 in).

The singularity of lenses is almost separated by the nose bridge that creates an inverted V at the bottom center of the lenses. It has a seven-base line curvature. The carbonic tapered lens technology (TLT) lenses are also hydroleophobic.

There are three lenses that could be interchangeable. The package includes the following lenses: 1) clear, 2) “Ignitor” – rose-colored with light mirror finish, and 3) mirror in gray, black, platinum, or yellow.

As the name suggests, the lenses could be interchanged by pivoting the arms. A small detail in the form of the logo of Smith Optics with Smith beside is printed on the upper corner of the left lens.

As every pair of sunglasses commonly does, each pair of Smith Optics glasses is bought together with its hard case, soft pouch, and cleaning cloth.

Design-wise, the large lenses with minimal frame support, offer a panoramic view of surroundings. This also means a greater protection for the eyes in terms of impact-induced injuries or radiation-cause eye disorders.

Each lens has different functions different from one another. Clear lenses have 100% transmission of light and provides the least distortion from normal view. The Ignitor lenses has red hues that enhance contrast leading to deeper details. Meanwhile, mirror lenses reduce glare and block most radiation. The lenses are coated with a hydroleophobic material.

The coating brings hydrophobic and oleophobic properties to the surface of the lenses. This means that the lenses both repel both polar and non-polar substances such as water, oil, and grease. This property prevents fingerprints from staining the lenses’ surface.

With lenses made of polycarbonate, there is impact-resistance property.

Finally, the TLT technology provides 0% distortion on the images viewed through the lenses. The seven-base line curvature of the lenses only shows that they have a correct balance of flat and wrap curvature on the user’s head.

More Information About the Eyewear

The lenses could be easily interchanged with the ease in using the pivot motion of the arms. The nosepiece is never a hindrance when changing lenses. Though it is easily pops out during the process, it still is securely anchored on the assembly.

The two-point adjustment of the nosepiece allows the movement of the lenses closer or farther from the user’s eyes depending on the user’s preference.

With the morphology and design of the glasses, having minimalist frame design makes the glasses perfect for speed-related activities like cycling, driving, or running. Sometimes, the frame could introduce air drag.

Though the air drag may be negligible in reducing the overall speed of the athlete, it may annoy the user by having uneven air flow all over his or her face. It may look vulnerable but, again, carbonic lenses are made sure to withstand impact and shock so the user could be assured of a safe drive.

The downside of Smith Optics V2 Max Sunglasses is the height of the arms. Compared to the original Pivlock Max glasses, this model has arms that is 1 cm higher. It could be disturbing for an athlete that wears helmets or another head gear.

Moreover, the material of the frame constitutes one of the advantages of buying this product. TR-90 is a moldable yet durable material perfect for use in sports sunglasses. Meanwhile, Evolve frames are made of a bio-based material.

Hence, if the consumer is an environmentalist, this feature is something he or she could have a liking to. The durability of Evolve frames is at par with those made of 100% nylon. Yet, Evolve frames are made of a minimum 55% castor oil – a very stable material that does not interrupt in the global food chain.

Based on my last research, Smith Optics V2 Max Glasses’ price is at the range of $79 to $160. Basically, the cost differs because of the style and color of the lenses.

There are also replacement lenses that could be sold at $80.00. This price is already a great deal especially that Smith Optics offer a lifetime warranty.

Bottom Line

Smith Optics V2 Max Sunglasses specialize in the curvature of its lenses. It provides the optimum visual acuity and performance.

This pair of glasses is perfect for use in speed-related activities. The price could be expensive but the technology and the after-service package could answer for it.

  • Durable and Lightweight
  • Includes case and cleaning cloth

  • Cleaning the lenses may take some time

Hi Everyone! I created this website to share my thoughts about the solutions to various eye problems that are caused by too much staring at digital screens. I also tackle about preventive measures to minimize the harmful effects of UV rays.

  1. A 9.5 out of 10 is a great rating for such cool looking glasses. Whenever I where sunglasses, I find they’re always uncomfortable after a long time of wearing them. But the Smith Optics look promising with the hydro megol material. I’m amazed they offer 100% transmission of light to provide a normal undistorted view. I just always thought distortion was a characteristic of sunglasses. Good to know there are options! Thanks for reviewing. I’ll look into these more on Amazon.
